Provide and develop programs and solutions that foster an inclusive work environment. 


Lead the shaping of a vision and compelling message for DEI by creating aspirational goals, plans for change, and assessment of initiatives. Integrate the DEI strategy into business processes including recruitment, performance management, procurement, leadership development, employee engagement and retention.


Create SSOE's Employee Resource Group (ERG) program and ensure the ongoing success and productivity of ERGs by collaborating with ERG leaders and executive sponsors, overseeing regular effectiveness evaluations, and serving as a point of contact and consultative partner for employees wishing to launch new ERGs.


In addition to the specific responsibilities of its function, this position is an integral part of the Human Resources Leadership team, which focuses on people solutions for our global organization. The CEO, VP of Human Resources, and this position will coordinate regularly to ensure alignment.


Partner with Learning and Development (L&D) to embed DEI in learning programs such as new manager, high potential programs, and ethics training. Seek opportunities to embed capability building, where appropriate (interview training, succession planning, etc.).


Recommend and advocate for DEI policies, management, and decision making to reflect inclusive leadership. As education is a key part of this role, deliver training on inclusive leadership to a wide variety of audiences and train others to do so throughout the organization.


Establish and lead SSOE's DEI Council to make decisions on future investments to further our DEI roadmap. This council will have a regular interface with the company's board of directors.


Build strategic partnerships internal and external to SSOE. 


Initially, this position will report directly to the CEO. This will ensure the appropriate emphasis to the corporation and provide the leader with the highest level of support within the company. This will be evaluated after two years. As the program matures, this position may report to another executive. In any case, this position is a permanent member of the Corporate Management Team, and the board of directors' DEI council committee.


Work across the organization, in partnership with executive management and senior business and function leaders, to prioritize, develop and deliver programs described above.


Establish trust and credibility with leaders as a valuable sounding board on organizational and talent issues surrounding DEI. Provide strategic advice, engage with stakeholders and consult with senior management on DEI initiatives.


Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners in their local community to help further SSOE's vision and DEI agenda, and work with leaders, employees, and ERGs to build and maintain these same relationships in their local communities.


Partner with the business to build a strong commitment to creating and maintaining a supply chain that ensures the inclusion of diverse groups in procurement plans.


Work closely with internal partners to analyze, evaluate, and report on DEI in talent programs and processes. Influence better decisions related to people practices and HR priorities through benchmarking, compelling data, analysis, and recommendations for SSOE's business that align with and support the company's core values and strategic goals.


In partnership with the Talent Acquisition Team, develop and cultivate external partnerships with colleges and professional associations to attract diverse students and other professionals and with local community-based and professional associations.


SSOE has established relationships with external organizations such as Catalyst. DEI leader will evaluate and recommend those partnerships for relevance and suggest any additional partnerships that would help attain the goals of our initiative. It is expected that external consultants will form a substantive portion of our expertise pool.


Regardless of the employee work location, given the high profile and people aspect of this position there will be an expectation of travel to SSOE major operation centers.

  • This would include Portland, OR, Toledo, OH, Atlanta, GA, Nashville, TN, Detroit, MI. Also, given that the CEO and VP of HR are located at the company's HQ in Toledo, there will be an expectation of more frequent travel to that location if incumbent based outside of Toledo. In the first two years, expected travel would be at a 30% level and potentially decrease as the person becomes familiar with the company.


Metrics & Reporting


Participate in key benchmarking surveys in order to evaluate SSOE's DEI strategies and recommend future opportunities for SSOE's DEI roadmap.


Build and monitor key metrics to develop an effective reporting approach that measures the impact and effectiveness of SSOE's goals and ongoing activities for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. 


Contribute to the annual stockholder report and company scorecards, as well as provide strategic advice on how to improve programs and practices to enhance key business outcomes.


Communications & Facilitation


Work with with stakeholders (Operations, HR, Marketing, Technology, Finance) to identify opportunities for collaboration that furthers SSOE's goal around being an inclusive employer of choice.


Collaborate with the CEO and the Director, Human Resources on the development, implementation, and communication of SSOE's DEI roadmap with the input of other stakeholders. Actively promote employee awareness of and engagement with DEI. Look for opportunities to tell SSOE's overall story internally and externally.


Facilitate open and honest discussions about inclusion and diversity at all levels of the organization in order to advance SSOE's inclusive culture.




Minimum of 10 years professional work experience, with a minimum of 4 years working in a leadership or management role required.


Progressive experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex organization is preferred, as is direct experience in the A/E/C industry.


Bachelor's degree required.


Proven leadership abilities to influence, motivate, coach, and develop others.


Deep knowledge of best practices in DEI, including expertise and comfort in facilitating meaningful and difficult conversations with a wide range of stakeholders.


Proven track record of community engagement relationships and initiatives.


Demonstrated cross-cultural competencies, including strong emotional intelligence, influencing skills and the ability to engage and build relationships with underrepresented communities, and wide range of internal and external stakeholders.


Proven ability to think strategically & creatively around DEI application to the business and employees.


Organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.


Experience in a global environment using virtual communications.
